DID YOU KNOW? Turtles bring water in and out of the nares and this allows them to “smell” underwater. Turtles may use olfaction to find food and perhaps distinguish between different areas such as feeding grounds (i.e., different estuaries) or nesting beaches.

The satellite tag for Flash was sponsored by Dolph and Sharon von Arx during last year's Magic Under the Mangroves Event. Private donations such as these have allowed our Science staff to track the movements of the critically endangered Kemp’s ridley turtle in the Charlotte Harbor and Ten Thousand Islands estuarine complexes.
These efforts are providing a better understanding of how turtles live in Southwest Florida estuaries and this information is needed to protect these vital feeding areas to ensure the viability of this endangered species.
