The artistic minds stretch out the soundtrack into a wave file, so they can literally see the rise and fall of crescendos and decrescendos and place the fireworks exactly where they want them.

"Sometimes you want it to be at the tail, at the low end of the note," Kerns said. "Other times on a symbol crash, you might want the firework to be bursting right at that moment."
This year's recorded lineup features artists including Phillip Phillips, the Zac Brown Band and Martina McBride and culminates with "America the Beautiful" featuring Ray Charles and Alicia Keys.
The fireworks, which start out as shells ranging in size from 11/2 to 10 inches in diameter, emerge as quick popping bursts of light — great for fast-paced songs — and large gold chandeliers that linger as they fall in the night sky.
The colors are determined by different elements packed into the shells — lithium salts make red, sodium shows yellow and copper reveals blue. Iron creates sizzling sparkles. Antimony cooks up a glitter effect.
